also chi chi could absolutely hand ass to people, god damn
what the fuck? how come we never get to see goku punch the air like that again?
i always thought a bride was some kind of food
"i love you"
"what's that mean?"
i am LOSING IT
oh yeah, the next fight is krillin vs piccolo
pretty sure this is the only time this ever happens
i love how piccolo uses the cape against krillin here
shen is fucking terrifying dude
having your attacks look like clumsiness is wild
damn, yamcha got his ass beat by shen
it's time for goku vs tenshinhan
the fights epic but i gotta go to bed, so next time we'll start with the fight in earnest
and we're back. i'm getting rather tired of doing live commentary because i don't really have much of anything interesting to say tbh
goku is absolutely toying with tenshinhan right now. ten is going all out and breathing super heavy while goku is just chill and relaxed
just ONE of goku's shoes is FIFTY POUNDS
i'm seeing double! eight tenshinhans!
clever of them to put the ad break just as goku is knocked out after getting hit by ten's eye beams
HOLY SHIT. GOKU USED SOLAR FLARE
goku vs tenshinhan was pretty good, but not as good as the last one
i think next is shen vs piccolo, then the main event: goku vs piccolo. sgonna be good
it's actually a little disappointing that tenshinhan's character note and development was sidelined for vegeta to get the role as "always trying to surpass goku". i think it would be neat to have a way to stretch the limits of mortal endurance vs goku's basically insane limits as a saiyan in the forthcoming z
"How much more amazing can Goku possibly get?"
-Krillin, before Goku even learns the kaioken
piccolo vs shen is gonna be intense with this kinda buildup
fuck dude, this fight is the highest display of raw power yet. what the fuck
also i actually kinda like how gravity is still a thing despite flight becoming more common when fighting, which is something that basically disappears in z
A REVERSE MAFUBA
god damn, if thats how a one episode plot relevant fight went, goku vs piccolo is going to be wild
"Beating opponents who are strong enough to excite him is all he wants." truer words have never been spoken of goku
god damn. piccolo's last resort blew up the whole fuckin island
what a match. what a match
"looks like it didn't hit anything vital" motherfucker that DEFINITELY destroyed a whole lung
FINALLY. goku has won a tournament
fucking incredible. great show. 10/10
the "ending" of dragonball before the between series filler is basically the best ending it could've been
it also really provides a lot of necessary context for the "nobody watched dragon ball" line in dbz abridged
i'll write up my full thoughts later, after i watch the last few filler episodes with the wedding and such
ABOUT DRAGON BALL
as always, thank you for joining me on this journey. i had a great time and i hope you did to, despite the delays. i'm probably going to switch for longer-form, less frequent commentary moving forward, since it feels like too much of an obligation to liveblog my reactions as things happen, and it doesn't feel as organic to me when i'm forcing out reactions to all the cool stuff happening on screen while it's live
that being said, i really enjoyed dragon ball. the beginning was kind of rocky until it found its stride, and while the humor elements could have made for a fine anime, i'm overall glad that they eventually dropped the comedy stuff for a slightly more serious, but not afraid to be goofy at times, tone
i think what i'll remember the most from dragon ball are the very well paced and intense fights, especially the multiple extremely great tournament arcs. this is helped by how every antagonist and many minor characters felt real and like they had actual depth and personality to them. characters do get sidelined because this is, ultimately, goku's story, but it's cool to see that they're not forgotten and can still grow and develop alongside goku, albeit at a slower pace
dragon ball's art and world design also really set it apart. every region feels beautiful, and many places actually feel different from one another. oftentimes, you get the sense that goku is going across vast distances over an incredibly diverse world, with its own granular cultures and citizens, and even the myriad species of sentient and nonsentient beings. the world of dragon ball can actually feel like a real world at times
unfortunately, dragon ball also dates itself by attempting to portray a fully realized world. there are a few characters that are portrayed in ways that, to put it nicely, simply do not hold up. i'm certain anyone familiar with the show, and some people way more suited to the task than i am, can tell you all about assistant black, general blue, and bora and upa, and how their portrayals may be dated at best. i'm also going to say that the perverted jokes, especially some of the ones early on, really kind of took me out of the experience and were sometimes more of a distraction than anything. the show's clinging to this bit, while perhaps a product of making the jokes in the first place, made me a little uncomfortable at times. in depth criticism, however, i feel is outside my scope as a media analyst, and also outside the scope of this thread
i think, however, the show succeeds in spite of these potential failings. the writing manages to weave together a living breathing world with few hiccups, and the show is genuinely fun and interesting to watch, and when it hits its stride, it never stops. i would easily recommend dragon ball to pretty much anyone. in the end, i had a great time
next time, we're going to take a brief break from dragon ball content and watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and maybe Second Gig, too. i might put second gig in the middle of z, however. i also have the opportunity to switch from watching regular z to kai, and i'm gonna do that so i don't have to keep cracking open my laptop every time i want to watch some dragon ball
see you all in the next thread
